Marius Jansen is an emerging artist based in Bloemfontein that owns and curates a number of collections of natural history specimens, cultural objects d’art collections as well as a large collection of South African artworks. Intrigued by South Africa’s natural realm and its social perceptions within, Marius’s artistic intention is to engage the viewer in a conceptual dialogue with natural and cultural behaviour. He focuses on exploring with oil paint on various surfaces as a medium to convey the interdependent relationship between social behaviour and natural constructs.

Born in 1972, Marius obtained his B. Arch degree from the University of the Free State in 1998 He completed his registration as a professional architect with SACAP in 2007. Having developed a passion for expressing himself creatively, Marius has always had a keen interest in developing himself as an artist. In 1998, he was an assistant to the curator of the Johannes Stegmann Art Gallery, under Mrs. Jeanne Joubert, where he developed his love for collecting and curating. During this time, he curated two exhibitions showcasing works from the University’s Permanent Art Collection. Furthermore, Marius took part in the Sanlam Portrait Awards in 2018 and has also taken part in several other group exhibitions.

Today, Marius Jansen is in his second year of studying painting at the Fine Arts Department at the University of the Free State and is presently employed as Chief Architect at the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
